    Yarn

We start with fine cotton yarn, between 100s and 200s count, sorted by hand before it goes anywhere near a dye vat.

  3. Hands lifting indigo-dyed yarn from a dye vat

    Natural dye

Hanks are dipped, wrung and aired until the colour settles — indigo, madder, turmeric and the greens in between.

  4. Cotton warp stretched on a traditional pit loom

    Warp on the pit loom

The warp is stretched and threaded through the heddles of a pit loom, set into the floor so the weaver sits level with the cloth.

    Weaving the Nizam border

The body stays plain. At the edge, zari carries tiny inverted checks and minute dots — the Nizam border — one pick at a time.

Each saree is checked by hand for broken threads and even selvedges, then folded, tagged and packed for you.

What is a Mangalagiri saree?

A Mangalagiri saree is a handloom saree from Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, GI-tagged since 2013. It is woven from fine cotton on pit looms, with a plain body free of motifs and a zari Nizam border of tiny inverted checks. Mangalagiri pattu adds a silk warp for more sheen and weight.

    Soft after the first wash

The indigo is even and the border is finer than in photos. It softened nicely after one cold wash.

    Wore it for Varalakshmi Vratam

Crisp, light and the zari border photographed beautifully. My mother asked where it was from.

    Exactly the green I wanted

I did a live video check first and the colour matched what I saw on the call. Draped well for a wedding.

    Good colour, slight starch

Came with a light starch, which washed out. The red is deep and did not bleed.

The silk-cotton has a quiet sheen and the pallu checks are very fine.

    Slightly darker than photos

Indigo is a shade deeper than my screen showed, but I prefer it.
